EGH6080   Using Corpora in Language Research   (15 credits)

Description

This module offers an introduction to the ways in which corpora (electronic collections of texts) can be used in language research. There are five key questions that this module will address: 1. What different kinds of research problem can be tackled using corpora? 2. What ready-made corpora are already available, and what kinds of research are they appropriate for? 3. How can I design and build my own corpus? 4. What software packages are available for analysing corpora, and what are their strengths and weakenesses? 5. What do I need to know about statistics in order to use corpora effectively? Throughout the module you will read a number of different research articles that utilise corpora in different ways, as well as attending practical computer laboratory sessions.
